Great Dane Clothes: Introducing Our Polo and Rowing Dog Jerseys

Finding clothes for a Great Dane can be surprisingly difficult.

Most dog clothing is designed for much smaller breeds. Even when an item is described as “extra large”, it can still be too short through the body, too narrow across the chest or simply nowhere near large enough for a genuine giant breed.

And when something does fit, the design is often either extremely practical or extremely novelty-driven.

We wanted something different: lightweight Great Dane clothing with a distinctly British sporting character.

Our new D&D Polo Club and rowing dog jerseys combine giant-dog proportions with heritage-inspired designs created especially for The Developer & The Dane.

Sporting jerseys for very large dogs

Great Danes have a distinctive build: tall, long-bodied and deep through the chest. Their proportions can make standard dog clothing difficult to fit, even when the advertised weight range appears suitable.

For that reason, choosing the right size should always begin with measurements rather than breed or weight alone. Check your dog’s chest circumference, back length and neck measurement carefully against the individual product size guide.

Our jerseys are available in larger sizes and are designed to offer a more realistic option for Great Danes and other substantial breeds.

The D&D Polo Club jersey

The first design draws inspiration from traditional polo-club colours and sporting crests.

It features a D&D Polo Club emblem, contrasting navy edging and an equestrian-style back design. The result has the look of an old sporting jersey, adapted for a dog considerably larger than the average club mascot.

It is smart, playful and unmistakably part of The Developer & The Dane world: British country style, large dogs and just enough eccentricity.

Great Dane owners are asked whether their dog is a horse often enough that a polo-club jersey feels almost inevitable.

The rowing-club jersey

The second design takes its inspiration from British rowing clubs and boathouse culture.

Rowing clubs have a long tradition of unofficial canine mascots. Dogs appear on riverbanks, docks and in coaching launches, quietly supervising proceedings and becoming as much a part of the club as the boats themselves.

Our rowing jersey brings that idea into the collection with crossed-oar detailing, a club-style crest and traditional sporting colours.

Designed for Great Danes with natural presence and sporting style, it looks perfectly at home beside the boathouse, on the riverbank or joining the spectators at a regatta.

Lightweight mesh construction

Both jerseys use a lightweight mesh-style fabric rather than thick sweatshirt material.

This gives them the appearance of genuine sporting tops while keeping the garment less bulky on a large dog. They are ideal for photographs, events, club days, outings and those occasions when an ordinary collar does not feel quite distinguished enough.

As with all dog clothing, jerseys should be worn under supervision and removed if your dog shows any sign of discomfort.

Why dress a Great Dane?

Great Danes do not need an extensive wardrobe, but their short coats can make an extra layer useful in cooler conditions, particularly when they are standing around rather than exercising.

There is also the undeniable fact that Great Danes look exceptionally good in clothes.

Their height and presence turn even a simple jersey into a complete sporting uniform. They somehow manage to look both dignified and faintly ridiculous, which is one of the breed’s many talents.

Suitable for other giant breeds

Although these jerseys were inspired by life with Angus, they may also suit other different sized dogs, depending on their individual measurements.

Breed alone cannot guarantee fit. A broad Mastiff and a narrow Wolfhound may have similar weights but very different proportions, so the size chart should always be the deciding factor.

British sporting style for dogs and their people

The jerseys sit alongside our wider polo and rowing collections, including clothing and accessories for owners.

The shared sporting references, heritage colours and club-inspired artwork allow the pieces to be styled together naturally—whether that means a rowing jersey at the boathouse or a polo jersey beside a muddy Land Rover.

They carry the same slightly eccentric British sporting spirit that runs through The Developer & The Dane collection, bringing together heritage colours, club-inspired details and life with very large dogs.

Made for dogs who already attract attention

Taking a Great Dane anywhere tends to invite questions.

People ask how much they eat, whether they require a saddle and occasionally whether they are actually a horse. Dressing one as a member of a polo or rowing club is unlikely to make the outing less noticeable.

But Great Danes already turn an ordinary walk into an event.

They might as well dress accordingly.
