Great Dane ownership comes with a few very specific household rituals. One of them is keeping a towel somewhere surprisingly close to the water bowl.

Not every Dane is equally drooly, but when an enormous dog has just had a drink, there is a certain amount of enthusiasm involved. Fortunately, it quickly becomes part of the rhythm — and comedy — of life with the breed.

The water bowl deserves its own little plan

A washable mat and a sensible position make a big difference. Give the dog enough room to drink comfortably and, if possible, a route away from the bowl that does not immediately cross your most precious floor.

Then accept that a Great Dane may still emerge with half the bowl attached to its chin.

Keep a towel where you actually use it

This is one of those tiny changes that makes giant-dog life easier. A cloth tucked near the bowl, back door or favourite resting place is much more useful than the perfect dog towel stored three rooms away.

Washable textiles earn their place in a dog-friendly home precisely because they can be used, washed and put straight back into service.

The occasional impossible mark is part of the story

Great Dane drool has impressive reach, particularly after a vigorous head shake. Washable paint and wipeable surfaces are excellent allies, but so is a sense of humour.

Eventually you stop wondering quite how a mark reached that height and simply clean it while the dog looks completely innocent.

Visitors usually become Dane people quickly

A quick chin wipe after drinking solves most social situations. Regular visitors soon learn the routine and, more importantly, discover that the enormous dog attached to the drool is usually far more interested in affection than causing trouble.

It becomes part of what makes a Dane a Dane

Great Danes bring everything at scale: the paws, the sofa space, the leaning, the greetings and occasionally the wet chin.

You make a few practical adjustments, keep a towel downstairs and carry on enjoying the enormous, affectionate dog in the middle of it all.
