What is a Blue Great Dane?

Despite the name, a blue Great Dane is not literally blue. The recognised colour is a deep steel-blue shade that can look slate grey, charcoal or silvery blue depending on the light. The colour comes from dilution of dark pigment, which gives blue Danes their distinctive soft grey appearance.

Do Blue Great Dane puppies have blue eyes?

Blue Great Dane puppies can be born with striking blue-grey eyes that often darken as they mature, becoming amber, hazel or brown. Some retain lighter eyes into adulthood. Angus, our own blue Great Dane, had beautiful blue eyes as a puppy before they changed as she grew — one of those little details you almost forget until you look back at the puppy photographs.

Are Blue Great Danes rare?

Blue is an established Great Dane colour rather than a separate or exotic variety of the breed, although you may encounter it less often than some of the more familiar colours. What makes blue Danes so memorable is the combination of their enormous proportions with that unusually soft steel-grey coat.

Do Blue Great Danes have a different personality?

This is where Great Dane folklore becomes rather entertaining. Among owners, blue Danes sometimes have a reputation for being especially goofy, expressive, sensitive and just a little dramatic. There is no established evidence that coat colour determines temperament, but the stereotype is certainly part of Great Dane owner folklore: majestic from across the room, complete clown once you actually know them.

Famous Blue Great Danes

Blue Great Danes have produced some remarkable characters. Giant George, a blue Great Dane from Arizona, became a Guinness World Record holder and measured an extraordinary 43 inches at the shoulder.

Another, Maverick, was named the 2023 American Humane Hero Dog. The 150 lb European Blue Great Dane works as a USO therapy dog, offering comfort and companionship to military personnel and their families, including people going through periods of emotional distress, recovery and bereavement.
