Why is it called a Cocker Spaniel?
The name comes from the breed’s original work flushing woodcock from dense cover. Cockers were small enough to work through thick undergrowth where a larger spaniel would struggle, yet sturdy enough for a full day in the field.
What is the difference between an English and an American Cocker Spaniel?
In Britain, “Cocker Spaniel” normally means the English Cocker. The American Cocker developed separately and is generally smaller, with a shorter muzzle and more profuse coat. Both trace back to the same old spaniel family.
What is the difference between a working Cocker and a show Cocker?
They are the same breed, but generations selected for different priorities have produced recognisable types. Working Cockers tend to be lighter, extremely athletic and bred around field ability, while show lines generally have a heavier coat and a more traditionally sculpted Cocker appearance.
Why do Cocker Spaniels have such long ears?
The low-set, feathered ears are part of the classic spaniel look. They also reflect the breed’s old gundog heritage — although in a modern household their chief occupation may be dipping into water bowls and collecting bits of the countryside.
Does the Prince and Princess of Wales have a Cocker Spaniel?
Yes. Their black Cocker Spaniel Orla has appeared in official family photographs and had a litter of puppies in 2025. The family previously owned another black Cocker, Lupo, making the breed a familiar part of modern royal family life.
