Where did Golden Retrievers come from?

The breed was developed in the Scottish Highlands in the 19th century by Dudley Marjoribanks, later Lord Tweedmouth. His breeding records show that a yellow retriever called Nous was crossed with a Tweed Water Spaniel called Belle, helping to establish the line that became the modern Golden Retriever.

Why are Golden Retrievers so good at carrying things?

They were bred to retrieve game gently, so a “soft mouth” was essential. That instinct still shows up rather charmingly in pet Goldens, many of whom seem happiest when carrying a toy, slipper, stick or anything else they consider worth retrieving.

Are all Golden Retrievers the same shade?

No. The coat can range from a pale cream through rich gold to deeper reddish-gold tones. The shade varies naturally, but the characteristic feathering and warm golden colouring remain some of the breed’s most recognisable features.

Why are Golden Retrievers used as therapy and search dogs?

Goldens combine trainability, sociability and a strong desire to work with people. Those qualities have made them successful as assistance dogs, therapy dogs and search-and-rescue dogs as well as sporting companions.

Who was Bretagne, the famous Golden Retriever?

Bretagne was a Golden Retriever search-and-rescue dog who worked at Ground Zero after the September 11 attacks with her handler Denise Corliss. She later responded to other disasters and, in retirement, worked as a reading-assistance dog. She became known as the last surviving 9/11 search dog.

Our Golden Retriever gifts and homeware celebrate that combination of beauty, usefulness and cheerful character. Explore more breeds in our Dog Gifts by Breed collection.
