What is a Mantle Great Dane?

A mantle Great Dane is black and white, with a solid black ‘blanket’ extending over most of the body. The traditional markings include a black skull with a white muzzle, a whole or partial white neck, white chest, white on the legs and a white-tipped black tail. A white blaze on the face is optional.

The result can look remarkably formal — rather as though a Great Dane has arrived already dressed for dinner.

Why are they called Mantle Great Danes?

The name comes from that large area of black across the back and body. It resembles a mantle or cloak draped over the dog, with the white neck, chest and legs appearing beneath it.

Even within the recognised pattern, markings vary from dog to dog. The breed standard allows a small white break within the black blanket, so a mantle does not have to look perfectly symmetrical to be recognisable as one.

What is the difference between a Mantle and a Harlequin Great Dane?

Both are black-and-white Great Danes, but the pattern is quite different. A harlequin is predominantly white with irregular black torn patches scattered across the body. A mantle is predominantly black across the back and sides, with the white concentrated around the muzzle, neck, chest, legs and tail tip.

Put simply: harlequin looks patched; mantle looks as though it is wearing a black coat.

Is a Mantle Great Dane just a black Great Dane with white markings?

No. Mantle is a recognised Great Dane coat pattern in its own right. A solid black Great Dane should be glossy black, whereas the mantle pattern has characteristic areas of white arranged around the black body ‘blanket’.

Why are Mantle Great Danes sometimes called Boston Great Danes?

You may still occasionally hear the older nickname Boston Great Dane. It came from the resemblance between the mantle’s crisp black-and-white markings and those of the much smaller Boston Terrier.

The modern name is mantle — and on a dog of Great Dane proportions, those markings make for a particularly striking silhouette.

Was a Mantle Great Dane ever the world’s tallest living male dog?

Yes. In 2024, a black mantle Great Dane called Kevin, from Iowa, was recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s tallest living male dog. He measured an extraordinary 0.97 m — 3 ft 2 in — at the shoulder.

Despite his size, Kevin was described by his family as exceptionally friendly and something of a couch enthusiast. He loved naps, tried to squeeze himself into small dog beds and was thoroughly unimpressed by the vacuum cleaner — all of which may sound rather familiar to Great Dane owners.

Sadly, Kevin died unexpectedly only days after his record was announced. His brief spell as a record holder nevertheless made this handsome black mantle Dane one of the best-known examples of the colour.
