Where does the Rottweiler come from?
The breed’s ancestry is linked to the drover dogs that travelled with Roman armies and their livestock across Europe. Those dogs eventually became established around the German town of Rottweil, which gave the modern breed its name.
Why were Rottweilers called butcher’s dogs?
For centuries Rottweilers helped butchers drive cattle to market and pull carts. They became known as the Rottweiler Metzgerhund — the Butcher’s Dog of Rottweil — and were even trusted to guard the day’s takings, reportedly carried in a pouch around the dog’s neck.
Why do Rottweilers lean on people?
Rottweiler owners often know the “Rottie lean”: a substantial dog quietly placing its weight against your legs. One theory links the habit to their old cattle-driving work, when dogs used their bodies to help move livestock. Whatever its origin, in a modern Rottweiler it can feel like a particularly solid form of affection.
Why are Rottweilers black and tan?
The classic Rottweiler coat is black with clearly defined rust-to-mahogany markings on areas including the muzzle, chest and legs. The contrast is so closely associated with the breed that even a simple silhouette with those markings is immediately recognisable to Rottweiler people.
Who was Wynd, the famous Rottweiler?
Wynd was an award-winning therapy Rottweiler who worked with bereaved military families, veterans, hospital patients and children in reading programmes. In 2015 she received an AKC Award for Canine Excellence in Therapy, a lovely counterpoint to the breed’s sometimes formidable public image.
Our Rottweiler gifts and homeware celebrate that combination of strength, history and devotion. Explore more breeds in our Dog Gifts by Breed collection.
